you could use a precision rectifier ie op amp with diode in feedback loop - 
see natsemi databook for LM3914 display driver chips  - suitable cct in 
there [no scanner here..sorry] - this goes to a comparator - when the audio 
amplitude exceeds a certain point the comp trigs and sends a + vtg out which 
could be used as a gate signal - a little hysteresis in the comparator 
circuit helps with stability..
