Soldering on single-sided boards

I recently discovered a good way to solder on single-sided PC boards. In
particular, this was a board from Tom Gamble, but it should apply to any
board that doesn't use plate-through holes. I pre-tin the pads with a thin
ring of solder before inserting any components. I use water-soluble
solder* to tin the pads, and to solder the components, making a nice clean
finished product.

* Solder: Kester Flux #331, 0.020 diameter

I realize that this is not an earth-shaking discovery, but I haven't heard
it mentioned here. Perhaps all of the experienced DIY constructers do this
without thinking, but I thought I would mention it. Any users or critics
of the technique are free to respond.
