potmeters taper..

Pots come as either linear or log tapers.  You need to find out what
your old one is.

If I remember correctly, usually log tapers are used for audio volume
controls, but I am not sure if that is the case for every application.

If you have an multimeter, you can probably easily tell by hooking it up
and watching the needle as you rotate it.
