potmeters taper..

Hi,

I have to replace a potmeter on an amplifier. The schematic gives a value 
of 1MB. Are there standard rules for the taper of a potmeter, like 1MA is a 
one meg logarithmic type, and 1MB is one meg linear... Or does this vary by 
manufacturer?
