The way that one of the 303 clones (possibly the MAM) did this was to not
re-start the gate when notes were played legato.

IE: if there was space between each note, each note would get a new gate
pulse.  But if a new note on comes in before the existing note's note off
arrives, then the gate stays open, and the note slides.

This makes it fairly easy to do in a sequencer without messing with any
extra controllers.  If you're very good on a kayboard, you can also use your
playing style to determine whether notes slide or not.

The "auto-glide" on the SH101 is also a lot like this.  A very useful
feature once you master it.
