AVR//broken keys

I just bought the AVR STK200 today, which I will use for my MIDI CV project.
Now it's time to learn AVR assembler. But I need a good starting point,
examples or a course somewhere on the net maybe? Anyone?

And one of my friends has a Roland W30 or whatever, but some of the keys are
broken. Can I do the replacements myself? Where can I get the parts for
that? And he asked for a full check up, what can you do but removing the
dust a little???

And one more question; I'd like to use one of those knobs that you can keep
on turning on my project.(The ones you find on effects processors) I believe
it's called a binary encoder... Where do I find these things, and any tips
on using them?

Thanks
Roel

Sorry about the all-digital nature of my questions...
