'How 'n' hell do Frost-free/no-frost and auto-defrost fridges work?'

As far as I can remember the last time my fridge croaked and I tried to
fix it, there is a heating coil in with the condenser coils in the
freezer part of the fridge. At predefined intervals (twice a day?) a
timer switches off the cooling and the heater kicks in and melts all the
frost and ice that has accumulated around the cooling coils. The
resulting water is drained off via a plastic tube down to the base of
the fridge where it collects in a pan. A small fan helps to evaporate
the water. This process happens quickly enough to melt the ice but not
long enough to substantially warm up the main part of the fridge.

Sounds reasonable?

Cheers,

Peter
