recommend env follower circuit?

It depends on what you want to follow...
Envelope followers usually trade off speed of response for low ripple...
If you want both it is hard to do.

For Guitar, I prefer a combination of peak detector (and use the output of
this...) coupled with a normal rectifier/filter combination. The peak detector
is set for the "normal" decay of the guitar, and the rectified signal is used
to detect if the input suddenly stops (muted strings) and decays the peak
detector faster.

This doesn't work well with other instruments that don't decay at a (normally)
predictable rate like woodwinds etc...
