None of the old Macs had a heat sink on the processor (maybe if you 
overclocked it)--the only thing that directly needed forced air was 
the power supply. The original Mac didn't even have that--which 
explains why mine smoked two days after I got it home.

If it feels uncomfortable warm to the touch, it probably needs to be 
cooled. There's expo-ish curve to speed vs. heat (all that CMOS 
transitioning).  Note that the heavy duty devices are some 
combination of Peltier device, heat sink and fan. Fast processors get 
REALLY hot--especially Intel.

Boy was that 128K Mac quiet...
