You know, I have had the same issues, and have been wondering if I could rig
a switch to TEMPorarily bypass the fan during recording, and then switch it
back on as soon as the take is done.
Anyone out there think this is a bad bad thing to do? How long can I get
away with this before I fry my Mac?

Subject: Fan noise madness!!
Ever since I mounted all the parts in my computer together I've thought
that there's too much noise being generated by the fans (processor fan
and psu fan). There is the same tone coming from the psu fan all the
time, whereas the processor fan decides what tone to play, depending on
if it's in a bad mood or not, it usually ends up sounding like some
crazy animal.
(For those of you complaining on the a3k's fan, compared to my computer
the a3k is as quiet as a mouse!)
Now, this is probably a common problem. My brother is having this
problem too. But I need to solve it, because I want to be able to record
in my room with my Rode NT1 (condensor mic) without recording the
computer which almost is "singing" louder than me.
Are there any specific brands/models/types of fans (both processor and
psu) that are known for being very quiet? Someone told me that there's a
processor fan called "whisper", which is extremely quiet. Where can I
buy one of those?
All help appreciated, thanks.
Cheers,
Johan
