To socket or not to socket?

Hi Michael,
We use machined pin IC sockets in all the boards we build at work and I've
never had a problem with an IC coming loose. These boards go into video CD
players to give them computer control via RS232, as well as audio/video
switchers etc. They're installed all over Australia and often get thrown in
the back of a van for a thrill ride!! There's also a 48 way audio matrix
switcher in a radio station. IMHO they're very reliable, and inexpensive if
you buy a reasonable quantity.
Regards,
Stewart Pye.
BTW: I was glad we had sockets when I had to replace the MAX232 that got a
whack yesterday!
