I've compensated VCOs using this approach. Since the NTCs have expo
temperature dependancy, you get compensation only for a "small" temperature
region (compared to the -50..150deg range for the wirewound). But this is
sufficient, maybe a range of +-10deg arround room temp. Look at this for an
example: (I know it says preliminary...)

I've used this compensation scheme in the main VCO of one of my machines,
it works remarkably good.
