slightly OT : mixing board

I'm playing audio from my PC to my WS-X1 mixer, then to the speakers, and 
everything's working fine. Then the cat goes and plays with the cables, and 
suddenly the output from the mixer to the speakers dissappears. If I turn the 
gain on the mixer all the way up, I hear a little bit of quite distorted audio. 
The problem is definitely something wrong in the mixer, nothing like turning the 
volume on the speakers up.....

Can anyone offer any suggestions before I start poking around inside of 
expensive equipment?
