IMHO... 40 watt. Use more heat and less time. The heat does not have time
to do collateral damage to the PCB. I use a fixed heat 45W Ungar Imperial and
have not toasted a board yet.
A too-small Iron is bad news. I have YEARS of experience though...
(some might say... millenia ?)
The good temp controlled irons are very good also. They idle at fairly low heat
but get hot FAST when needed. Very Pricey.
I use a big chisel tip... like a 1/8". I use the side for fine detail... the
flat for big
pads, wiring, etc.
