The ASM-1 VCO is probably going to have the fewest number of parts,
for what you get, that is. The VCO core itself only has 1 opamp, an
LM311, a couple of caps, a FET, and a handful of resistors. This VCO is
very linear, and it is pretty easy to add the other waveforms (although,
that will add more parts). An exponential converter can be done with a
dual transistor (or CA3046), a dual opamp, a handful of resisotors, and
a +3300ppm temp compensating resistor (or, if you like to experiment,
other list members have been quite succesful with negative tempco
resistors, but you have to put it in a differnent place).
There are many ways of making a VCO (some people are even doing it
with tubes now!). Actually, I think the tube oscilator is probably
champ right now in the fewest number of components :-)
I think you will find they all take a lot of support components.
Even the old CEM3340 could end up with a fair number of external support
parts.
