I’ve made a couple of ring modulators from the Electro Harmonix circuit
‘frequency analyser’ (633) that was translated in a Japanese magazine for
use with a 1496. They sound fine to me. I can GIF the circuit after the
break if anyone’s interested. Then again the 1496 is hardly cheap at about
£10.

On the subject of CAD I’ve just started with Easy PC from Number One Systems
(Numberone.com- they’ll download/send a free version that doesn’t save
files). For the reasonable price (£100 for 500 pin max version) it seems
fine to me. The problem I’ve always had in the past is that you need to
download a manual with any free software which is usually like a small
telephone book and then if you get stuck you’ve got no support. The free
versions often have bits missing that are specifically designed to make you
pay up in the end when you get well stuck in. I guess I shouldn’t complain
about free stuff but I farted about for ages until I finally put my hand in
my pocket
