Just one idea:

Zener noise should have lots of 1/f components.
Depends on how "dirty" the junction and surface is.

Therefore some sources say that a simple "low noise" resistor
is used as noise source, such as a 1Meg metal film resistor.
Of course, the noise voltage will be very small, high gain
amplification is needed.

But I guess the pattern of low frequency noise (for trigger etc)
will be different then that  of a heavily 1/f drowned source.
