Actually, I'm hoping that the 8970 chip is really cheap and sounds better
than a typical BBD.  Maybe I'm being too optimistic, though.
(When you can get a Lexicon MPX-100 for $200, DIY delay effects are probably
not worth the trouble anyway...)

I checked Digi-Key's web site and didn't find it, but I'll try e-mailing them
to see if they can get it.  (If it's cheap.)
