old pc parts

I recently stumbled onto lots of old pc parts at a local junk/antique shop.  A couple of the boards (sound board/motherboard etc) said they where from a 1982 Compaq.  A couple where loaded with ics.  I'm a bit of a newbie... I am only familiar with the functions of a few ics.. Would anyone out there know if there would be anything usefull for synth applications on these sort of boards?  I can get them cheap enough and look them up... or list them online.  I was just hoping to avoid another one of my famous impulse buys (which have formed there own land of half working junk).  Any help would be great.
