Actually I use a different circuit.  I have a constant current source
feeding the top
of the resistor string, and short out the string with contact closures to
ground...
So an open collector NPN would probably work OK. I think the saturation
voltages
would match pretty well if you hammer them (lots of base drive). I haven't
tried this.

I agree with TomG that the midi/dac is a more useful solution these days....

Yes the analog switch would have to be GOOD... not a CD4016, or 4066... have
to
be one of those Maxim switches or like that....
