Compressors theory?

Hi

How exactly do auto-attack & auto-release work in compressors? A friend's
been bugging me to build a simple compressor for him and auto-attack &
release sound like good options. Problem of course is that all places just
say that "auto-release changes release time automatically according to the
signal" which could mean anything.
