I use a small angle grinder attachment that goes on my pcb drill .. angle 
grinder type disc about 2cm dia... this makes a lot of aluminium shavings, 
if you did this on a bare pot, it may get inside.. I mount all the pots on  
the panel first, and cut as the last thing before putting the knobs on... 
then you can just wipe the dust off the front of the panel, it never harms 
the pots..
