You can drop in a signal on the audio input, yes.

Yes, you use an linear pot hooked to supply lines to tweak the frequency.
Another input can be made available for frequency modulation (LFO, envelope,
whatever).

You could have use for the LFO and Noise right away, then the VCA and envelope
generators could be of interest. Possibly the glide buffer. Then naturally the
VCOs eventually.
You migth want to complement with a Moog-ish filter, like the Oakley filter
for instance... (haven't built it).
