I never scan or print directly into a pdf file. NOooooo.

Unfortunately, if you REALLY want to work with them you need to get
Acrobat Exchange/Distiller. This lets you get at everything.

Much better to have the original scans in some other format, unless
of course you're stuck taking someone else's pdf apart...
