that's right! that's why neve channels go so loud.... I should know this,
I've spent hours under the hoods of at least two big neve desks. (rupert has
this interesting theory- he even demonstrated it in blind listening tests-
that ordinary people can tell the difference between sine and square at
9kHz.... which explains why cds and dats sound a bit lifeless compared with
vinyl and analogue tape, let alone real life....)

(ranting hat on)
I disagree- if you're going to create a genuine three-dimensional soundstage
by using extra channels, whatever the mechanism by which they are
stored/delivered, they should be full bandwidth like the "front" channels.
I use, and have had printed on an album sleeve, the same simple third
speaker arrangement that eno put on one of his "discreet music" titles-
"airports", I think; this is just a full-range speaker hooked up between the
two "reds" on the back of y'r amp.
as long as you're not running the thing too hard or into a very low
impedance, even average material comes right out into the room and takes on
a new life. best place for the third speaker is behind you somewhere, so as
to make an almost equilateral triangle.
nowadays I have the third unit on the "b" speaker connections so I can
switch it off easily- some tv dramas in the uk are post-produced with all
the effects very wide (for stereo tv's with the speakers built in); the
amount of "difference" signal this produces can cause the third speaker to
be too loud and drown out the dialogue.
I switched to a full-range unit when my own band started exploiting the
effect- we're not distributed on vinyl, which is a shame in some ways, but
it means we can have lots of lop-sided or out-of-phase bass which produces
this dramatic invasion of one's listening arena.......
ordinary stereo just sounds like it's coming out of the wallpaper now.
