Yes but you have to look at the current consumption is when in this mode..
sure it will be less than what the chip draws in active mode, but it can in
some cases still be several ma.. far too much for a lithium backup..

Hi Dan:
Some years back I designed and built an analog/digital storage system that
used a Hitachi HM6116L CMOS static ram, 2K X 8 bits. This RAM had a
current draw in the microamp range when deselected, I used a 3.3 farad
capacitor to supply the 6116 when the circuit was powered down. Data
retention was several weeks with this arrangement. The 6116 is a generic
part with many second sources.
