no, my point was not that building stuff doesn't appeal to me, just that I
prefer building or modifying stuff that makes a noise or contributes
actively to the process somehow. I don't see how a normally-functioning midi
to cv converter has anything particularly to contribute to the character of
the music I want to make, beyond allowing one lot of toys to talk to the
other lot.
so, not heresy exactly, but prioritizing.
BUT an example of why I would build my own midi-cv: I bought a philip rees
single channel unit expressly to use with a yamaha cs30 (Hz/v and s-trig)
and it turned out to be absolutely pants. I had them exchange it to no
avail- mr rees himself wanted to come round and see what was happening. I
don't remember what he was testing it on, only that it wasn't another yamaha
(maybe an ms10- I forget, but I know it did horrid modulation things when I
tried it on a mono/poly).
I'd still like to get the yamaha under midi control eventually, but I took
the view that it was more fun using the yamaha more-or-less as it came out
of the factory (that's another story) than trying to drag it into the 90s,
and that maybe the rees unit would be happier doing cv/gate in american
instead of japanese; put it on the pro-1 instead. maybe one day I will
attempt this build, but right now it's hard enough to find time to go in
there and even look at my synths.
