Thomas Henry's MIDI-to-CV Connection

is it really cost-effective these days to build one's own midi-cv converter?
interesting project though it was back in 1989, I'm now more interested in
stuff that makes noises, and new ways of interfacing with that stuff. a
midi-cv converter, for me, is a black-box problem solver and, so long as it
works, I'd rather get on with using/abusing the more interesting stuff
either side of it. the first one I bought in 1990 was a little over 100 quid
and was ok apart from the huge current draw on the gate outputs when driving
moogs- it would suffer a volt-drop on the cv outputs- fixed with some series
resistance.

as for mono-mode- why would one need this? if I'm using a mono synth, I
programme monophonic parts for it, using either a hardware sequencer
(notron, doepfer, MAM) or a keyboard connected via the normal midi-cv...
whenever I've accidentally recorded overlapping notes into a sequencer that
supports poly parts (mmt8, in my case), the synth makes a noise reflecting
the conflict thus prompting me to edit out the offending information.

that said...... I don't know about the kentons, but my old groove m2cv (once
I'd rebuilt their terrible psu) provides for upper-, lower- or last-note
priority while the philip rees unit seems to be just last-note. again, in
the case of the polyphonic sequencer, the onus is on me to avoid having
"gate times" longer than "step times" so this ceases to be an issue unless I
especially want the mono synth to produce a legato effect. this is harder to
achieve and translate from the midi-domain; I usually end up using pitch
bends.
