This would probably be a Cat-eye tube and not a e.l. pannel as we know
today.
It makes sence to use these since cat-eyes are signal level indicators.
It works a lot like the picture tube,
a signal aplied to a set of "bending plates" regulate the number of
electrons that hit the screen.
(sorry if "bending plates" isn't the right word,
just hope you know wat I mean anyway)
Cat-eye is a nick, to see where the name came from:
take a look at that old tube radio in your grantfathers shed,
look for a green shining tuning indicator, this is the cat-eye.
