[DIY] OT: Tube amp disaster

Tube amps generally don't like to look into wrong impedance. Have you 
changed the output tubes? They're responsible for maybe 75% of all tube amp 
failures. That's why they're in sockets ;-).
On the other hand, bad smell could be from the output transformer (if memory 
serves me right).
