Yes, you could even short the supply when plugging in a 3-conductor TRS plug. 
 The proper connection isn't fully made until the plug is all the way into 
the jack, so there's a possibility of a short-circuit while you're plugging 
it in.  (It only takes a few milliseconds to pop a fuse - or few more 
milliseconds to blow a temperamental transistor or IC...)   Harry's right on 
about wiring in a current limiting resistor.  I would say that a 4.7K 
resistor would be about right.  In the unlikely event that 4.7K seems to be 
limiting your CV range, then try 2.2K or 1K.
