If you are looking at a reasonably long time, like more than a minute, you could
use one of those 'infinite' sample&hold ckts (based on an A to D) and keep
comparing the currently held voltage to the peak detector, updating the s&h
if the
peak got higher.
If you like programming, this is a project that cries for a PIC micro.

BTW, was this one of the geosensors at AllElectronics?
I couldn't work out why these turn up so often, even in California, but then
i thought.. oil prospecting!
