In fact, you can.... use your OWN head! (appropriate for DIY).
There is lots of stuff on the net abt using panasonic capsules in your own 
ears to make binaural mics. A friend had very good results recording 
nature settings with this (search for 'stealth' mics too, people use setups 
like this at concerts to make pirate tapes)

I wonder if a tennis ball with a number (say 4) of capsules embedded in the
surface 
would do for a DIY sphere?
We aren't looking for perfection here, we're looking for results.
