If you want to get a *really nice* micropohone, I'd consider looking at 
models from Earthworks.  They are very accurate, and would be perfect for 
your needs.  I don't beleive they are battery powered, but you could buy a 
phantom power box.  Earthworks stuff is a little expensive, but they are 
absolutely amazing mics.

If you want to do it cheaply, Shure has an omnidirectional mic in their Beta 
Green series.  I own the cardioid version (BG 4.1), and it works fairly well. 
 These ARE in fact battery operable, too.
