Ryan,
I am also new to the list (Hi List!). Here are some helpful resources I have
found during my adventures into DIY Synthesis. This information should answer
all of your questions.
Synthfool -- http://synthfool.com/
(Kevin Lightner's excellent resource)
PAiA -- http://www.paia.com/
(John Simonton's great source for modules and kits.)
MOTM -- http://www.synthtech.com/motm/
(Paul Screiber's excellent source of modules and beginner information.)
Midwest Analog Products -- http://mall.lakes.com/~map/
(Thomas Henry's great source of modules and plans.)
Blacet Research -- http://www.blacet.com/
(Just found them today. A source for more modules.)
Oakley Systems -- http://www.techrepairs.freeserve.co.uk/projects.htm
(More modules.)
Hopefully by looking at these sites you will get an idea of what a modular is.
They go from handheld size all the way up to the size of a large room. There is
an excellent PDF file you can download from MOTM that details the basic modules
you need to get started as well as the tools you will need to build them.

Check out the end section titled "What Modules Do I Need?" and "Can I Build
These Kits?" I found it very informative.
I'm sure the veterans of this list will chime in with even more useful module
and information sources that I haven't mentioned.
Have fun!
