I do not know what this mysterious box really was, but I do not think
that your Osc/VCF/VCA box give you that joy that you are expecting. The
most fun sounds come from the modulations.
I think your box should have a crossmod from vco audio-out to vcf cv-in.
Also there should be two LFOs with Saw and Triangle; one LFO modulating
the vca the other the vca. 
Use for the pots of speed and the amout of the LFOs a joystick (like in
a radio remote control for model airplanes). Playing with this joysticks
gives what they are named after ...
