Good points, also, I've read that IRC poses security risks.
An email list server can create an archive and members
can save emails that are of particular interest to them. But the
timing issue is probably the best reason why this won't work
well. After all, we are a totally international list with
members all over the world, which is quite pleasant. And those
who pay by the hour for internet access would be less inclined
to participate as well. Email can be downloaded and read leisurely
offline. IRC requires one to be connected for the entire session.
