Computer cable is a great way to get different colors...The key to getting
all the wire you need is to find it, not buy it...I've done cleanouts for
several companies, and after one I had enough wire to fill my car to the roof
4 or 5 times....Telephone cable, mostly...the big 50 conductor stuff, nice
solid 22 gauge with 50 different colors..

Also, I've been reading a book lately that might be helpful to a
beginner...it's called "Build Your Own Home Lab", by Clement Pepper. It's got
a lot of examples of various analog and digital circuits in it, including a
voltage-to-frequency converter using an LM311. Very informative, if you can
tolerate the typos, mistakes in the text, and general sh*tty layout..(text
refers you to a diagram that you passed 2 or 3 pages ago.) A bit of a pain to
read, but lots of good info.
