LDRs are quite nice, no feedthrough, quite low noise.
But the disappointing is the range. I mean if the device gets more Ohms
it will take ages to get further down. I guess this is simply the effect of
charge depletion. So for reasonable fast transistions only a 100:1 range
can be used (average figure).

Has someone tryed to cascade two LDR stages such that a wider range
can be achieved without sacrifying speed?
I mean staggered response, first the first light goes off, then the second...
