As long as it is no monochrome laser diode, there will be enough light,
maybe even a blue LED will work. It is only two humps, i.e. two maxima
of sensitivity. This does notsay that other wavelength do not work.

I think that red LEDs emit a lot of light with small current, the brightes
LEDs I know are red. So it makes sense to use red LEDs for efficiency.
