I tried with several different LEDs. It might be true that green is best. But yu won't find a very high intensity green LED.
If you choose yellow instead, you can have several times more light output at the same current.
My best results was with a narrow beam yellow LED. It is made by Everlight an is called EL 42-21.
The yellow has 606 mcd output at 20 mA. The green has only 122. There is also an orange with 820 mcd. Maybe that is even better.
