The most efficient combination is the one where the spectral peaks
match...
LEDs (most of them) have a fairly narrow peak. So green might work for
some...
red for others...

BUT don't forget "photometry". things like the angle of the radiation of
the LED
will make a big difference... and the MOST importany point... intensity
varies with the
square of distance. Thats for a point source which
radiates in all directions...  The real LED may be better (reflector and
lens added)

Any photons that don't strike an active area are wasted !!!
