Why is plus on top?

Well, as a physics teacher having to teach all the eletric circuits
stuff, I always had the + to the left and the - to the right. The
batteries were therefore at the top of the circuit. Current went around
in an anticlockwise fashion. That seems to be the standard way of
drawing simple electric currents. As circuits got more complicated they
would work down the page.

But teaching electronics at A-level... it was back to the + at the top.

But if you really wanted something to confuse the kids, it was
gravitational potential. 'Sir, Why is the Earth's value of V equal
to -63MJ/Kg?' Well Kids, its all about definition, just accept it OK!
