Simple preamp questions

Hi everyone,

I've been slowly building my first modular (with PCB's from Tom G, Chris 
MacDonald, Blacet, PAIA, etc).  Up until now I've generally used it by 
itself, but I'd like to start using it like an effects processor, too.  

What is a good preamp design to use to amplify line level signals up to the 
levels used in a modular?  I assume you'd want a  high-Z input, but I have no 
idea what type of gain range to have available, or what type of output 
impedence would be best.

I was figuring a simple opamp circuit would probably suffice... any 
recommendations or warnings?  I'm a good kit builder, but not much of a 
designer, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
