Boy, is this a hot topic.

Tim mentioned the single most useful thing to remember when reworking 
boards--add some fresh solder. This works miracles and saves a LOT of 
time (and wear on the traces). It's so habitual now I don't even 
think about. Just remember to remove ALL the solder and then resolder 
the joint with the proper amount when you're through--too much solder 
is bad, new solder mixed with old is even worse.

BTW, this makes solder wick work MUCH better. A little dab on the 
wick itself doesn't hurt.
