The key to a more durable PCB is TWO ounce copper; it makes an amazing
difference in the reworkability of the board. (You can guess what we
use...) Even that however will not guarantee that you can rework the
board more than once per pad.
It's pretty pointless to try and save a component; cut the leads and
pull out the bits. Use just enough heat and a solder sucker that is
clean and well lubed.
A board holder is a great idea. This allows you to use the soldering
iron on one side of the board and the sucker on the other, assuming a
double sided board.
The advice we give our kit builders is to get it right BEFORE you solder
the part in.
