I bought a bunch at a swap meet.  I discovered that it was defective - it
sucked - but not in the right context....   It may have developed some
kind of oxidation or something.  It may help to have rosin handy to aid in
the process but it may be that older solderwick goes bad.  Rosin can be
found in music stores for voilin bows.  Fresh solderwick seems to work the
best in getting up all the solder without damaging IC pins.  Our rework
people use tons of the stuff and tossed out the vacuum-based desoldering
systems.  

If you have a board with tons of solder you need to remove, just fill it
with some additional solder and slap it against your benchtop to get it
off.  Watch for spray hitting other pcb areas though.
