If the component is dead, it is often better to cut the body from the legs
then use needle nose pliers on the component side to pull each leg while you
heat the solder-side-pad with the iron. This is especially important for
those pesky Juno-106 SIP modules. You can then clean the solder from the
pads with braided copper solder wick and a little heat.
Usually too much heat or pressure rips off the pads but some boards are just
plain bad and fall apart no mater how delicate you are.
