I have increased the loopgain either on my clone, to give it even more
"wavy warp". But what I think, is that the properties of the diode limiter
influence the sound as well. Its response is high gain for an input less
than three diode drops, and low gain above/below that, while the soft
clipping of that OTA will behave a little different.

I attached a gif to visualize what I mean.

We see that outside the window formed by the clipper, we have approximately
unity gain, too low for selfoscillation.
The original thing can only resonate between -2.1 and +2.1V. Since the
loopgain is high enough here. So the large signal response should be
different to the VCF8e. When I observed a sawtooth filtered by my unit,
I've seen a saw with a "packet" of oscillations arround the center of the
wave, unlike in other filters where the ringing usually starts on the edge
of the waveform.

So true! But if someone asks about a smooth filter I would say "moog" or
"2040".
Which both have character and aren't clean either (when overdriven!).
If someone wants distinguishable sound then "MS-20" or "WASP".

Sure, I like it.

There is no such things as perfect things. Only varying tradeoffs!

But, hell you're right, I am a snob!

Bye,
 René
