About multis

Is a multi a simply a bunch of jacks hooked together?  If so could i use
cables with one plug on one end and between two and four on the other end
to save panel space?  As I've found with many things here most obvious
solutions simple problems have been rooted out long ago, so what is wrong
with this idea is a more accurate question.  Also, how manytimes could I
split an audio or CV signal before running into problems and what kind of
problems could I expect?
